I am writing you because a need has arisen in our church finances that could use your help in addressing.

I received a call from Mission Solano on Wednesday about a plumbing issue at the Travis property we have leased to them for their ministry since 1997.  The investigation by the plumber revealed that the problem was more severe than was originally thought.  Pipes under ground had broken and waste water was draining underneath the building.  This has created more than just a plumbing issue: it is a potential health risk.

We received a discounted quote for $1,200.00 to fix the problem. Due to the health hazard that could put the people who work at and are ministered to by Mission Solano in that building if we delay, by the time you read this email the problem will have already been fixed.  Unfortunately, this will put more strain on our already tight financial budget.  After much prayer and consulting our church council felt it necessary to ask for some financial assistance from our Church family or those who would just like to help out.

My hesitation in asking you to help is two-fold.  First, we are in the most financially challenging season of the year: Christmas.  Second, it has not been, or will it become my practice as a pastor to come to the congregation for special offerings — especially since you are all so faithful in your tithes and offerings, for which I am very grateful.  There are, however, times in the life of any church family when these needs arise.

The potential health risk to those at Mission Solano dictates that we must spend the money and fix this problem right away and,You cannot respond to the need if you are not aware of it, so the church council and I thought it best to let you know as soon as possible because: (1) The potential health risk to those at Mission Solano dictates that we must spend the money and fix this problem right away and, (2) it is the Christmas season and we are all making financial decisions and commitments daily this time of year.

I want to encourage you to consider what you might be able to do to help out in addition to your regular giving.  If you can’t give then pray that God would meet this need and continue to meet the needs of NCC.  Thank you for your consideration in this matter.  We will be taking a special offering on Sunday if you would like to contribute.

Before you start your daily devotions

First: Pray and ask that God would teach, correct, and train you as you study his Word.

We learn in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) that: “All Scripture is God–breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Be ready to study: find a quiet place to study, set aside all distractions, and be ready to receive from God’s Word.

Second: Pick a portion of scripture to read.
We recommend you use the included Bible reading program to help structure your study, but you can read through any portion of scripture.

During your study of God’s Word, apply the SOAP steps:

S: As you read, write down a specific passage that stands out to you.
Read over the passage, opening your heart to what God would want to show, reveal and teach you through these scriptures. When you have found a specific verse or passage that stands out to you, gives you a promise or other meaningful, truth start writing out the specific passage by the letter S.

O: Jot down your observations.
Briefly write out what you observed in the portion of scripture. What does this passage mean to you? What did you see in this verse or passage today that was new or meaningful? What does the actual text say? As you form your observation, give the passage a general description or title. (See example on next page)

A: How does this verse apply to you?
Write how this portion of scripture applies to you. How can you apply this verse, promise, or command to your own life? What does it require of you to “be a doer of the Word”?

P: Ask the Lord’s help in applying this to your life.
Close with writing out a personal prayer relating to this scripture, observation and application.
